The nutty, chocolatey organic coffee from Café Chavalo has a long journey across the Atlantic on the sailing ship “Avontuur” when it comes to Leipzig from Central America. Unusual but effective, because around 90% less Co2 is released than when transported with container ships that run on heavy fuel oil.

Organic coffee from Café Chavalo, fair and climate-friendly!

World trade can also be climate-conscious, it just takes longer. In order to take a stand against container shipping, Café Chavalo has its organic coffee shipped across the Atlantic from Nicaragua by sailing ship. The trip takes half a year, but saves around 90% of harmful emissions. Wind instead of heavy oil – we think it’s good!

Although the crossing is climate-friendly, the cultivation, roasting and packaging of the organic coffee produces CO2 emissions that cannot be avoided. They are therefore compensated with the help of a climate protection project in Nicaragua. Due to the subtropical climate in Nicaragua, the growing conditions for coffee beans are ideal. At the typical cultivation altitude of around 1200 meters, the fruits thrive in moderate temperatures and are hardly exposed to fluctuations.

We also think it’s good that Café Chavalo gets the organic coffee directly from the producer and doesn’t use any middlemen. This allows fair and transparent prices to be calculated. The beans for the organic coffee are grown by the Tierra Nueva cooperative association, which 250 smallholders have joined together to market their harvest and improve living conditions in the countryside. At an altitude of between 700 and 1200 meters, they cultivate coffee and turmeric, among other things, on small plots in mixed cultures.

In general, the country in Central America is considered poor. For the farmers, this means that they usually do not have the financial means to use chemicals, for example. As a consequence, however, this disadvantage is in turn an advantage for the quality of the organic coffee , which is accordingly organically grown. At the same time, the farmers hardly use any machines, which is why the harvest is done by hand. This means a more meticulous control of the fruit, which means that only the really ripe coffee cherries are removed.

The long-term roasting also gives the organic coffee a slightly nutty, chocolaty aroma. Good to start the day with.
